United Kingdom - Launch of the Agriculture and Food Security Strategic Framework

United Kingdom
July 27, 2017

A new strategic framework for tackling Agriculture and Food Security (AFS) launched today which will help researchers and stakeholders understand the key priorities within BBSRC’s agriculture and food security portfolio.

Agriculture and food security are both of economic importance to the UK and globally, and are a strategic priority for BBSRC to ensure the sustainable production of sufficient, safe, nutritious and affordable food to supply the world's growing population.

Dr Paul Burrows, BBSRC Executive Director, Corporate Policy and Strategy said: “We are committed to our vision to encourage a whole food-systems approach for agriculture and food security research, to deliver productive, resilient and sustainable food and farming.

The Agriculture and Food Security Strategic Framework will help to focus research to enhance UK and global food security and help provide essential knowledge and evidence to farmers, food producers, processors, retailers, consumers and governments.”

BBSRC has a broad remit across agriculture and food research. Whilst this has not changed, the Strategic Framework recognises that BBSRC cannot do everything and so highlights those areas where the Council would like to see increased research activity. These are the areas within AFS where BBSRC’s investment can make the most difference to the challenges faced.
