For instance, CL153 is a semi-dwarf, early-maturing long-grain Clearfield® variety that addresses some shortcomings of CL151, a variety that has long been a mainstay for Southern rice farmers because of its high yield potential. CL153 provides the best of CL151 along with big improvements like blast and lodging resistance. In addition, it has exceptional seedling vigor, much better grain quality and yield numbers that are very competitive with CL151. For growers who have been comfortable planting CL151 in the past, planting CL153 this season is one way to improve overall productivity and ROI potential.

CL163 is another top-performing long-grain Clearfield variety getting attention for 2018 as it continues to take the place of older high-amylose-content varieties. High-amylose-content varieties like CL163 are often grown under contract because of their excellent cooking qualities, providing an edge when it comes to managing for profitability.

CL172 is an extremely high-quality variety, as good or better than the old Cypress variety, which was the quality standard for many years. The long-grain Clearfield variety also offers good yield potential. CL172 is a key reason the U.S. is slowly getting back into the Nicaraguan market, which had been lost because of quality issues over the last several years. In addition, the variety provides desirable agronomic characteristics like blast and lodging resistance.

If you’re looking to plant a medium-grain Clearfield variety, go with CL272, which is comparable to Jupiter but has an improved blast package. Planting CL272 early in the planting window will help it avoid environmental conditions favorable to bacterial panicle blight.
