EuroBlight’s 2017 workshop tackling early and late blight in potato crops is taking shape. The event runs from May 14 to 17, 2017, in Aarhus, Denmark, and is being hosted by ENDURE member Aarhus University.
Registration is now possible for the workshop, whose main objective “is to present and discuss recent results on integrated control of late blight (Phytophthora infestans ) and early blight (Alternaria spp. ).”
The organisers report: “With global exports of seed and other mechanisms for spread of pathogens related to travel and trade, the emergence of new strains has become a global problem that needs global collaboration - to predict, prepare and recommend activities related to breeding, control and other IPM measures.”
The workshop’s specific themes will be:
- Tracking the potato blight pathogens in a global context: tools, network infrastructures and activities.
- Stewardship of host resistance genes and active ingredients. How to develop and adopt innovative and sustainable control strategies on regional scales.
- Education, advocacy and communication activities taking into account different scales and stakeholders.
The latest EuroBlight workshop was held in Brasov, Romania, in May, 2015, and brought together more than 100 participants from all across Europe, South America, USA, Israel and China. Subsequently, global efforts to tackle potato blight, including the creation of an AsiaBlight network, have been stepped up.
