Last week Seedtech and Syngenta hosted their annual cereal trials open day at their trial grounds site in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny. Visitors had the opportunity to view 930 varieties in 2,000 plots across a wide range of crops at one of Ireland’s largest independent trialling systems, with the very latest in fungicide research from Syngenta.
At the winter barley plots visitors had the opportunity to view the latest Hybrid technology. VOLUME is still the number one Hybrid winter barley, topping the Irish recommended list at 109% of controls. Volume offers all the positives expected from a Hybrid barley, superior yield with excellent grain quality. QUADRA is the new Hybrid winter barley, offering exceptional yields and disease package. The take home message on the day from Aidan Moore Seedtech’s Commercial Director was ‘growers margins increase with Hybrids’.
Seedtech Trials Manager, Patsy Kehoe introduced visitors to potential new winter wheat varieties which have been picked from a special screening trial set up a number of years ago. One to watch coming through this trial is GARRUS winter wheat, it’s a new high yielding wheat, with highly desirable disease resistant characteristics.
HUSKY oat, suitable for spring and winter sowing, has become the farmer’s favourite combining high yield and excellent quality.
Special attention was given to Seedtech’s portfolio of spring barley varieties. MICKLE is the market leading, superior feed barley variety while KWS Irina is the highest yielding variety on the 2015 recommended list and suitable for growing in all situation.
Syngenta gave visitors a first glimpse at the New SDHI fungicide, this technology is a step forward in the battle against wet weather diseases on cereals. Interactions between fungicide and PGR was explored on Hybrid barley as well as demonstrations on weed and disease control options on field beans.
