New herbicide, chickpea weed control, rose control are focus of University of Idaho Weed Science Field Day on June 19

Moscow, Idaho, USA
June 3, 2014

The annual University of Idaho Weed Science Field Day is planned June 19 near Moscow. Weed science researchers will offer farmers updates on new control strategies for Italian ryegrass and rattail fescue in winter wheat and other crops.

The field day, which is free and open to the public, will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. in the University Inn Best Western convention center lobby at the west entrance. The motel is located at 1516 Pullman Road in Moscow.

Among the tour topics will be recent work on Italian ryegrass and broadleaf weed control in chickpeas, ways to control invasive roses and field trials of a newly-released herbicide marketed as Zidua that may be a new tool to control Italian ryegrass. Trials are also examining several crops’ tolerance for the new herbicide, said Joan Campbell, a UI weed scientist and tour organizer.

“The new herbicide is something new, and people are interested in it,” she said. “Its big use in our area is for Italian ryegrass control in areas where we have so much resistance to existing herbicides.”

The invasive roses are often difficult to control in grasslands, hayfields and CRP or Conservation Reserve Program fields. The tour will include information about rose-control trials.

The tour will visit trial plots in the Moscow area, then conclude with a sponsored lunch at the UI College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Parker Farm about a mile east of Moscow on Idaho Highway 8.

Transportation for the tour will be provided. Idaho and Washington pesticide recertification and CCA credits will be available.
