The award-winning LIFE BIOAGRO project in Sweden has overcome significant obstacles to turn a waste problem into a new source of energy and income.

“We have for many years successfully been using Westrup seed processing equipment to clean our crops (crop seeds, forage grass, rape seed, and turf seed), however, residues from cleaning the seeds were really a big problem for us and we had to pay a lot of landfill taxes to get rid of the waste”, explains Managing Director Sven Olof Bernhoff from Skånefrö.
Mr. Bernhoff adds that this was the reason for them to start the BIOAGRO project under the European LIFE programme where they have developed a full-scale plant with a cleaning capacity of 3,000 kg/h for turning agricultural waste into biopellets that can be effectively burned to generate energy for their own factory and for the local community. Waste has been reduced by 100% and a totally fossil-fuel free seed drying and heating with minimized acid emissions has been obtained.
“Such a complex project with many new developments has, of course, taken a lot of hard work and has only been possible with a successful teamwork of the partners involved”, says Mr. Bernhoff.
Leif Goldbeck, Product Manager at Westrup, emphasizes that this project cooperation is only one example of the innovative mindset being an integrated part of the way Westrup is working – ie. with focus on customisation and on being a valueable partner for all our customers, whatever challenges they are encountering.
