Gene technology milestone - New Zealand is set to reap the benefits of gene technology following Government decisions on a new regulatory regime

New Zealand
August 13, 2024

A new bill is due to be introduced by the end of the year to allow for greater use of gene technology while ensuring strong protections for the health and safety of people and the environment.

It will be based on Australia’s Gene Technology Act 2000 and modified to work here in New Zealand. Like Australia, a regulator will be established to allow New Zealand to safely access the benefits of these technologies.

These changes will allow researchers and companies to further develop and commercialise their innovative products of gene technologies and unlock the potential of science to address major challenges from health to climate change.
