From the CTPS Potato Section

France
July 2, 2024

The CTPS Potato Section met on 14 June 2024 to discuss regulatory developments and the referral on climate change. This was the last plenary session of the CTPS’s 2019-2024 term of office, and an assessment of the actions carried out over the past 5 years was also presented.

As a follow-up to the previous Section’s discussions on the consideration of appeals, particularly in the event of a challenge to decisions relating to access to the Firm Flesh section, a dedicated workshop was held on 24 May. Following this workshop, the members of the Section raised the question of how to consider the data that applicants could provide in the context of appeals. Further discussion is needed on the following points in particular: authentication, comparability and weight in the decision, while maintaining a balance about the data obtained in the official system, the experimental system applied to all varieties evaluated as part of their application for registration in the French Official Catalogue. The meeting was reminded of the regulatory context that is currently being revised at European level, and whether or not the data provided by applicants will be taken into account in the discussions on the proposed PRM (Plant Reproduction Material) regulation.

With regard to the referral on climate change, the initial results of the survey carried out by the CTPS Scientific Committee and a study commissioned by SEMAE on the impact of climate change on seed potato cultivation were presented.

The CTPS Potato Section’s objective for this mandate was to increase the attractiveness of the Catalogue. The creation of “Agroecology” entries and work on disseminating evaluating data should contribute to this.
