FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Steve McCutcheon said the second assessment report for an application to approve the herbicide-tolerant corn line had been released for public comment.
“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community on issues raised in the report,” Mr McCutcheon said.
Further details on the assessment report can be found below. Submissions should reach FSANZ by 19 April 2011.
Food derived from herbicide-tolerant corn line (Application A1042 – 2nd assessment)
Dow AgroSciences Australia Ltd is seeking to amend the Food Standards Code to include food derived from a herbicide-tolerant corn line. The corn has been modified to be tolerant to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase inhibitors (“fop” herbicides) such as quizalofop-P-ethyl.
The genetic modification provides corn growers with a broader weed management option. FSANZ has conducted a full scientific evaluation of this GM corn to assess its safety for human consumption.
