Armenia promotes plant breeding joining the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants

Geneva,Switzerland
February 2, 2024

The 79th member of UPOV looks forward to cooperating with UPOV members in achieving food security and agricultural sustainability, in the context of climate change and global population growth.

Today Armenia deposited its instrument of accession to the 1991 Act of the UPOV Convention and will become the seventy-ninth member of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) on March 2, 2024.

UPOV membership will create a favorable environment for investments in plant breeding for strategic crops in Armenia, such as:

• Apricot
• Cherry
• Grape
• Pear

“Farmers and growers will have access to new high quality plant varieties, which are adapted to climate change and have higher productivity to ensure competitive production,” said H.E. Mr. Andranik Hovhannisyan, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Armenia in Geneva.

The UPOV system provides the legal and technical basis for international cooperation in plant variety protection. The system is aimed at increasing the number and availability of improved plant varieties for farmers and growers, through public-private partnerships and increased investments in agricultural value chains for the benefit of society.
