Blends to preserve the natural environment

France
November 29, 2023

Preservation mixtures, a provision governed by a 2010 European directive, are made up of seeds of non-selected species taken from the natural environment. Their aim is to preserve the natural environment.

These preservation mixtures are covered by a decree on the marketing of forage plant seed intended for the preservation of the natural environment, as part of the conservation of genetic resources, renewed in January 2023.

Authorisation to market these mixtures constitutes a derogation from the marketing rules, insofar as they may contain regulated forage species, meaning that they are subject to compulsory certification (governed by Directive 66/401). Marketing authorisation is given for a region known as the “region of origin”.

Currently, 20 preservative blends are authorised for marketing, with a further 11 awaiting publication in the Official Journal.
