Meet Richard Cogman, Strube UK’s new Managing Director

United Kingdom
August 15, 2022

Richard joins Strube after a long and successful career with our key client in the UK, British Sugar. During his time at British Sugar, Richard held several management positions. He has over 35 years of experience in UK agronomy and is an expert on arable, root crop, and grassland agriculture.

Having a real passion for arable agriculture, Richard spent his teenage years working on farms close to home in south Norfolk, before studying Agriculture at Shuttleworth College. He extended his practical experience on larger enterprises, working with combinable, root and vegetable crops.

After graduation, Richard joined British Sugar in 1987 working as a trials officer within the field R&D team. He quickly gained responsibility for a diverse range of field experiments, including managing variety trials (now NL & RL), mobile tarehouse harvesting, and an alternative crops programme.

In 1991, Richard transferred into mainstream agriculture and headed to Ipswich sugar factory as Factory Agronomist; supporting all growers with the latest advice to underpin yield, quality and crop profitability. In addition to this, Richard also started the British Sugar TOPSOIL business that is a renowned co-product success. Between 1996 and 1999, Richard took on the role of Agricultural Operations Manager, where he managed sugar beet purchase and was the interface between crop production and beet processing at Ipswich.

In early 1999, Richard was seconded into British Sugar’s Technical Centre in Norwich focusing on new opportunities as a project lead. In this role, he was focused on innovation with specific regard to fibre crop viability in the UK and Europe.

Later in 1999 and until 2018, Richard was appointed as National LimeX Manager with complete responsibility for every aspect of that co-product business, including high-quality field trials in a diverse range of arable, vegetable, and forage crops. This passion and expertise for co-products took Richard through much of Northern Europe, Spain and China, as well as having key involvement with major capital projects and other co-product management, including AD and digestate.

In 2018, while retaining LimeX, Richard also took on the Agricultural Business Manager role at Cantley sugar beet factory. There he led the local agronomy team and moved into leadership teams across British Sugar and AB Sugar before taking a short career break in late 2021.

Richard has been a member of the BASIS Professional Register (BASIS and FACTS) for almost 30 years and holds a NEBOSH safety qualification.
