The diversity of plants essential to our food production and bioeconomy is at constant risk of decline and neglect. Immediate action is needed. One important step in a positive direction is the recently launched Plant Genetic Resources Strategy for Europe. On 7-9 June, the European network ECPGR will meet at NordGen, one of its partners, to discuss the implementation of the strategy.
Plant genetic resources are the foundation of our food and bioeconomy. They are the building blocks for selecting or breeding crops that are more nutritious, productive, and resilient to pests, diseases, and environmental changes. However, these vital assets are under threat due to multiple factors, such as climate change and shifts in land-management practices.
“The loss of our plant genetic resources is threatening the long-term productivity, resilience and sustainability of agriculture and food systems. It is evident that actions need to be taken urgently to revert the trend. In this matter we must work closely together. I am looking much forward to discuss with colleagues when hosting the ECPGR Steering Committee meeting”, said Lise Lykke Steffensen, Executive Director at NordGen, the genebank of the five Nordic countries with head office in Alnarp, Sweden.
Last year, the Plant Genetic Resources Strategy for Europe was launched. The document provides a clear roadmap to strengthen the conservation and the sustainable use of plant genetic resources and is vital for Europe to meet its obligations in various international agreements, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
“Now it’s time for a step-change in political will and action in Europe. Genetic resources appear in different policies and strategies, but there is a lack of a coherent legislative and policy framework that needs to be urgently overcome. The plant genetic resources community, supported by ECPGR, is eager to start implementing the new strategy and help Europe make its agri-food systems more sustainable and resilient, and fulfil its bioeconomy potential”, said Marianne Lefort, Chair of the ECPGR Executive Committee.

Representanter från 30 länder kommer till Malmö och Alnarp för att diskutera europeisk strategi om biologisk mångfald
Den mångfald av växter som behövs för vår matproduktion och bioekonomi är hotad. Mångfalden minskar, mycket på grund av att samhället inte värderar dessa växtgenetiska resurser tillräckligt högt. Något behöver göras omedelbart. Ett steg i en positiv riktning är den nyligen lanserade strategin för växtgenetiska resurser i Europa. Den 7–9 juni kommer det europeiska nätverket ECPGR träffas i Malmö och hos NordGen i Alnarp för att diskutera hur strategin ska implementeras.
Växtgenetiska resurser är grunden för all vår mat och hela vår bioekonomi. De är byggstenarna som krävs för att ta fram grödor som är mer näringsrika, ger större skördar och har motståndskraft mot skadedjur, sjukdomar och klimatförändringar. Tyvärr hotas dessa avgörande tillgångar just nu av flera olika faktorer såsom klimatförändringar och ett skifte i hur vi använder marken.
– Förlusten av växtgenetiska resurser hotar den långsiktiga produktiviteten, motståndskraften och hållbarheten hos våra jordbrukssystem. Det är tydligt att något måste göras snarast för att vända trenden. I den här frågan måste vi arbeta nära tillsammans med andra länder. Jag ser därför fram emot intressanta diskussioner med mina kollegor när NordGen är värld för ECPGR:s styrgruppsmöte, säger Lise Lykke Steffensen, direktör på NordGen, de fem ländernas genbank med huvudkontor i Alnarp.
Förra året lanserades Plant Genetic Resources Strategy for Europe. Dokumentet innehåller en tydlig plan för hur man ska gå till väga för att stärka bevarandet av våra växtgenetiska resurser och främja ett hållbart nyttjande av dem. Planen innehåller avgörande steg som behöver tas för att Europa ska klara att leva upp till sina åtaganden i olika internationella avtal, såsom FN:s globala mål för hållbar utveckling och det internationella växtfördraget om växtgenetiska resurser för livsmedel och jordbruk.
– Nu är det hög tid att växla upp de politiska ambitionerna och gå från teori till praktik i Europa. Genetiska resurser finns med i olika styrdokument och strategier men det saknas ett sammanhängande och övergripande politiskt och juridiskt ramverk. Detta måste lösas snarast. De som arbetar med växtgenetiska resurser står redo att implementera strategin och hjälpa Europa att ställa om till mer hållbara och motståndskraftiga jordbruks- och livsmedelssystem, säger Marianne Lefort, ordförande i ECPGR:s verkställande kommitté.
Deltagarna kommer att besöka NordGens huvudkontor, trädgårdar och fält den 9 juni.
