Advanta Seeds achieved high ranks in Access to Seeds Index (ATSI) 2021 for contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Advanta Seeds achieved high ranks in Access to Seeds Index (ATSI) 2021 for contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
For the first time Advanta Seeds qualified for all regional indexes and debuted with an excellent rank of #4 in Africa, and raised to #2 in South and South-East Asia. In the previous 2019 global index, Advanta Seeds ranked in the top five seed companies.
“We are proud to rank among the world’s top companies in the Access to Seeds Index. Improving access to quality seeds to farmers is a part of our core business strategy and it is critical for improving farmers’ productivity and ultimately food security,” shared Bhupen Dubey, Global CEO Advanta Seeds.
The Index is an independent ranking that evaluates global and local seed companies based on their efforts to improve access to quality seeds for smallholder farmers.
In its third edition, the ATSI 2021 ranked 72 seed companies and their activities in Latin America, Asia and Africa. The ATSI 2021 was published by the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA), a non-profit organization aiming to achieve the SDGs by 2030 by promoting transformational change from farm to fork.
The ATSI 2021 assessed the seed companies in six measurement areas across four focus regions: Latin America, West Africa, East Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. Advanta Seeds achieved consistently high scores across all indexes and taking leading positions in Capacity Building and Marketing and Sales.
Compared to 2019, the most significant improvement was in South and South-East Asia, where the company ranked #1 in three out of the six measures: genetic resources and intellectual property management, seed production and capacity building. In these areas Advanta Seeds demonstrated leading practices in the seed industry.
Advanta Seeds’ commitment to smallholder farmers is backed by a strong strategy, including the breeding and introduction of new varieties in staple and vegetable crops, engagement of smallholder farmers in its seed production, and value chain partnerships. In addition, together with its parent company, UPL, Advanta offers a range of capacity-building activities, such as smallholder farmer training and improved access to output market.
Advanta Seeds is recognized for its multi-stakeholder and women empowerment initiatives such as Realizing Gender Equality through Empowering Women and Adolescent Girls, in collaboration with UN Women and Farm Africa, and women marketing program for Indonesia, a finalist of the UN Women 2020 Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards.
Access to Seeds Index
The Access to Seeds Index 2021 was developed as a ‘spotlight benchmark’ under the World Benchmarking Alliance’s (WBA’s) food and agriculture transformation. It focuses on and provides deeper insights into the specific contribution of the seed industry to the SDGs, particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The index evaluates the contribution of local and regional companies, and their global peers, in providing access to seeds for smallholder farmers in three regional indexes: South and South-East Asia (SSEA), Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), and Western and Central Africa (WCA).
