Well known Australian grains leader joins InterGrain board

A grains industry leader with more than two decades’ experience in Australian commercial crop breeding and global supply chain logistics has been appointed to the board of InterGrain.

Queenslander Barry Croker will start in December as a non-executive director on the board of InterGrain Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s leading cereal breeding companies.

Established in 2007 by the Western Australian government and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), InterGrain is recognised internationally for delivering quality malting barleys and udon noodle wheats.

Mr Croker has been appointed as GRDC’s nominee director to the InterGrain board.

InterGrain Chair Karlie Mucjanko said the organisation would benefit from Mr Croker’s extensive experience in the grains industry.

“Barry’s breadth of experience and leadership in the seed and grains sector will strengthen our capability and support our mission to deliver profitable and productive varieties to Australian growers,” Ms Mucjanko said.

Mr Croker has worked in the grains industry for more than 28 years and is well known for his work with Pacific Seeds and its parent company, Advanta Seeds. His career spans seed production at both an operational and management level, as well as product development and business management.

“Barry brings further expertise to our board in strategic leadership, crop breeding and governance. His first-hand knowledge and understanding of the commercial breeding global supply chain will be invaluable to InterGrain’s future growth,” Ms Mucjanko said.

GRDC Board Chair and South Australian grain grower Sharon Starick also welcomed the appointment of Mr Croker to the InterGrain board.

“GRDC invests in InterGrain on behalf of Australian grain growers and recognises the valuable role the company plays ensuring the development of varieties that meet both grower and end-user customer requirements,” Mrs Starick said.

“Ongoing improvements in crop genetics are fundamental for growers and helps ensure we remain competitive and sustainable.

“We welcome an industry leader of the calibre of Barry as the GRDC representative on the InterGrain board and believe his experience will be a positive for both growers and the organisation.”

Mr Croker replaces Queensland grain grower Chris Bazley, who has served as GRDC nominee director on the InterGrain board since 2017.

Ms Mucjanko paid tribute to Mr Bazley who she described as a highly regarded grower with a strong interest in plant breeding, who has made a significant contribution during his tenure with InterGrain.

“On behalf of the board and the InterGrain team, I would like to thank Chris for his outstanding service and commitment over the past eight years,” she said.

“His insights, guidance, deep industry expertise and governance experience have successfully guided InterGrain’s strategic direction.”

Mrs Starick echoed the comments saying Mr Bazley had played an influential role with the organisation and been an effective and committed nominee director for GRDC.

Mr Bazley officially finishes his tenure with the board at the end of the month.

Mr Croker joins InterGrain board chair Karlie Mucjanko, along with fellow board directors Bob Mullins and Emma Scotney.
