Bernard Conradie, a farmer from the Bergrivier area in the Western Cape, grows Sakata’s Quantum F1 Hybrid butternut on a massive scale, and the results speak for themselves. Known for its uniform, medium-sized fruit, excellent internal quality, and long shelf life, Quantum is a trusted variety in the industry—especially for export markets.
Quantum is well-adapted to warm-season production, delivering consistently high yields. Its vigorous growth habit makes it more resilient to disease, and its fruit is less prone to cracking. The variety has an excellent fruit set and an extended bearing season, ensuring a reliable harvest over time. With exceptional post-harvest durability, Quantum is suitable for both fresh market sales and processing.
For optimal results, Quantum should be planted at a density of 12,000–15,000 plants per hectare. While it thrives in warm conditions, cooler-season plantings may result in smaller fruit. The variety has intermediate resistance to Powdery Mildew (Px) (ex Sf), further enhancing its reliability for large-scale production.
