Bt cotton is the only transgenic crop approved for commercial cultivation in India

Bt cotton is the only transgenic crop approved for commercial cultivation in the country so far.

The Government has imposed moratorium on commercial release of Bt brinjal event-EE-I till such time independent scientific studies establish that Bt brinjal is safe for the human health and environment from the point of view of its long term impacts.

In addition there are several GM crops under various stages of research and development.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (Independent Charge) Shri Jairam Ramesh, in a written reply to a question by Shri Prakash Javadekar in Rajya Sabha today.
