Local seed businesses in Uganda: a market-oriented approach towards community seed production
Wageningen, The Netherlands
December 2013
The paper details local seed businesses (LSBs) in Uganda and their effort to create a vibrant, pluralistic, and market oriented seed sector in Uganda. The ISSD programme in Uganda focuses on creating autonomous, functional, and sustainable local seed businesses. ISSD Uganda has 30 LSBs spread in 3 geological regions in Uganda. LSBs have closer ties to farmers than commercial companies, and are recognized by local authorities and the National Agricultural Advisory Development Services (NAADS). LSBs have begun to build upon their social capital and farmers are more confident in dealing with LSBs to insure easy access to high quality seed. This paper has been submitted for publication.
