The most
important thing is to have realistic expectations. An
unrealistic expectation is that wildflower seed can be tossed
out on unprepared ground and they will come up without any
assistance, bloom the whole season and return every year
without fail.
The reality is
that it takes decades, even centuries, for a natural
wildflower stand to reach homeostasis. For man to recreate
even a crude approximation of this takes preparation and
maintenance. To create an ornamental display of wildflowers
that needs to last only one season, some preparation and
maintenance will also be required in order to achieve the
optimal result.
When done well, the results are
spectacular. You’ll get a tapestry of ever-changing colors,
shapes, and sizes. Wildlife, birds and insects may be
attracted to your planting. Once established, a wildflower
display can be expected to require less input and less
maintenance than a traditional garden, but it still needs some
maintenance. Ongoing weeding of the planting is important and
will increase its longevity.
