I expect to
see the industry become even more regionalized that it
currently is. The long-term trend is towards use of more
native species, whether in large-area landscaping or for
restoration projects. More of the seed of these native species
will be produced in the regions where they will be used, even
if the seed will cost more to grow there.
Historically, much of the ornamental
seed has been produced in California, or at least the West
Coast, due to suitable climates for seed production. As
production skill increases in other regions, more wildflower
and native plant seed will be produced within the region of
origin of these species.
I expect that much of the seed for
beautification uses of wildflowers will continue to be
produced overseas in climates that are favorable and where
costs are low.
