The care of
wildflower mixtures differs very significantly from other
flowers and ornamentals. Wildflowers require less water and
maintenance. But more importantly, the care is different
because when you have a mix, you have competition. Therefore,
maintaining a balance of species is especially important after
the first year. There are several techniques for doing this,
such as mowing, selective removal of seed heads and
over-seeding.
Weed control is a
much bigger issue with wildflowers because they are often used
in much larger areas where hand weeding is impractical. It is
essential to eliminate both the existing vegetation and weed
seed in the soil before planting wildflower seed, because it
almost impossible to tell weed seedlings from wildflower
seedlings.
Providing adequate
irrigation is also a much different issue with wildflowers,
because they are often planted where traditional sprinkler
systems are not used. Since direct seeding is most common, the
planting techniques are quite different: for wildflowers,
cyclone seeders, grass drills and hydro-seeding equipment are
often used.
