Planting is in full swing and concerns arise on seed safety when applying fertilizer near the seed – usually at planting. An online tool developed at SDSU can provide guidelines for producers and crop advisors with these questions. The spreadsheet based tool has been available for a number of years and has recently been updated and now contains information for 18 crops and 18 fertilizers. Inputs include crop, fertilizer, seed-furrow opening width, row width and estimated soil texture and planting moisture.
In addition, the web linked tool has been adapted for mobile Apple and Android devices. In the near future the tool will provide information for fertilizer mixtures as well. The tool can be found on the SDSU Plant Science: Soil Fertility website or by searching “SDSU Soil Fertility” and clicking on “Fertilizer Seed Decision Aid”. Choose the appropriate tool for your device.
