IDEX Health & Science webinar on new genotyping-by-sequencing method

Oak Harbor, Washington, USA
December 27, 2011

In cooperation with Cornell University, IDEX Health & Science debuts a new-method webinar describing a streamlined genotyping technology developed at Cornell’s Institute for Genomic Diversity (IGD). Titled “An Efficient New Genotyping-By-Sequencing Method for Highly Diverse Species”, the webinar explains how the new GBS method allows Cornell researchers to rapidly genotype any number of genetically diverse species with or without a reference genome. Speaking from the Buckler Laboratory where GBS originated, method developer Robert J. Elshire commented: “We’ve developed a genotyping method that is an order of magnitude cheaper than anything else out there.” In production-level GBS, Elshire’s team utilizes the Innovadyne Nanodrop II Liquid Handler and various Illumina Sequencing platforms.

Innovadyne Applications Manager Mary J. Cornett, Ph.D. leads the hour-long discussion with Elshire, IGD’s Sequencing Technology Lead. In describing how liquid handling enabled the rapid advancement of GBS, Dr. Cornett commented, “The Nanodrop II’s individually addressable channels and non-contact dispensing technology were well utilized here. This was a perfect example of how the multiplexing, (non-contact) capabilities of the Innovadyne instrument reduce liquid handling time and increase throughput in the laboratory.”

The webinar outlines other advantages of GBS including: low cost, high reliability; easy to implement, transfer, and scale; simultaneous marker discovery and genotyping; open platform enables many kinds of genetics research; software tools freely available for adapter design and raw data processing; produces ready-to-sequence libraries.

Applications for GBS include population studies, germplasm characterization, breeding, and trait mapping in diverse organisms. Of interest to researchers in central laboratories in the fields of Plant Breeding, Agriculture, and Ecology, the live webinar is on January 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM PST, and will offer opportunity for responses to questions. It is open for registration here. The archived webinar will later be available for instant viewing 24/7 on our website.
