Corn Belt Seed Conference takes U.S. industry information to the next level

Lafayette, Indiana, USA
January 20, 2010

The Indiana Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) and the Indiana Seed Trade Association (ISTA) have jointly announced the upcoming Corn Belt Seed Conference that will be held in Indianapolis on February 11-12, 2010, at the Sheraton Indianapolis Hotel and Suites - Keystone. A pre-conference Leadership Development Academy will be held on Wednesday, February 10. The two organizations have organized a conference packed with educational seminars, exhibitors, and networking opportunities.

Tim Reese, ISTA President, believes the joining of the two organizations will provide for a better conference experience. "We'll have the marketing and sales perspective, production issues and regulatory information. It will be a chance for everyone attending to refresh, recharge and get new experience."

The Wednesday prior to the conference kickoff (Feb 10) is a day for developing leaders. The Leadership Development Academy, featuring Rodney Vandeveer, is a day-long seminar that will assist in sharpening leadership and team building skills. Vandeveer offers his teaching, training and experience from 30 years in the industry and will target the following topics for attendees:

o Situational Leadership
o Motivation: Keys for Effective Leadership
o Developing Effective Teams and Team Building

"The presenter is a well-known and respected leadership trainer who uses motivation, humor and some audience participation to bring home key points about effective leadership and team building," says Larry Svajgr the Executive Director of ICIA.

The entire ag production industry is setting goals that look beyond tomorrow to break barriers such as production yield, weed control, managing information and technology, and limitations with testing. Thursday kicks off the first day of the conference with sessions and discussions that focus on how to break through these barriers.

"There are a number of issues facing the seed industry at the state, national and international levels. The Corn Belt Seed Conference will discuss the ability to take advantage of those opportunities and what we need to do to make sure we are prepared to lead the efforts to conquer the challenges," adds Andy LaVigne, President and CEO of ASTA.

Thursday's opportunities also include two workshops; Corn & Production Management and Disease Management. The Corn & Production Management workshop features Marcus Jones, Monsanto, and Tom Bingham, BASF, discussing corn plant density, seeding rate and row spacing as well as evaluating seed treatment trials. In the Disease Management workshop, Kiersten Wise, Purdue University, and Terry Niblack, University of Illinois, will discuss fungicides, nematicides and other disease management strategies.

Friday focuses on sessions outlining the impact of climate change to agriculture, the business of carbon trading and related economic policy issues. Wednesday and Thursday nights will feature social receptions, offering excellent opportunities to network.
