Grains Australia announces that the barley variety Laperouse has been accredited as malting barley

Australia
May 16, 2025

Grains Australia is pleased to announce that the barley variety Laperouse has been accredited as malting barley.

Laperouse

Laperouse was submitted by SECOBRA Research and Seednet, and was accredited as malting barley following evaluation by the Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC).

As the final remaining variety under evaluation in Stage Two for 2024, this now completes assessment for the 2024 malt accreditation program.

Laperouse is a medium to high fermentability variety and is best suited to medium rainfall regions across Australia.

Growers interested in accessing Laperouse seed are encouraged to contact Seednet. Additional information about the variety is available on the Seednet website.

Classification program

As with all previous accredited malting barley varieties, the market will determine the success of this new variety.

Grains Australia’s classification program is recognised as the required standard for the determination of all new Australian malting barley varieties.

The Accredited Malting Varieties table has been updated to reflect this newly accredited variety and the status of other varieties under evaluation.

Information on other barley varieties currently undergoing evaluation is available on the Grains Australia website.
