Principal Technician Breeding

Location: Shafter, California, USA

We are looking for a Principal Breeding Technician to join our Agricultural Solutions team in Shafter, CA.

As a Principal Breeding Technician you will assume the day-to-day and seasonal responsibility for the Elite Stock Seed program under the direction from the Principal Breeding Technician and the Principal Breeder with input from the Global Production Specialist. You will plan, implement and monitor the operational practices for the short-day onion breeding program to ensure the consistent delivery of Elite Stock Seed to our Operations department with the required quantities of high quality seed. 

During your shift as a Principal Technician Breeding, you will

  • Execute and oversee mother bulb and cage seed plantings with attention to detail, coordinate with breeding and farming teams, monitor crop conditions, and conduct seasonal domestic travel for planting, harvesting, and data collection.
  • Collaborate with the ESS Manager and Operations Global Production Specialist to plan seed production, provide regular updates on activities and inventory, and share necessary information for successful hybrid development.
  • Maintain a safe work environment, train and supervise temporary workers, and ensure the maintenance of machinery and equipment.
  • Execute evaluations for identified phenotypic traits of Elite Stock Seed as instructed by the Principal Breeder Specialist, make selections according to QA specifications, and utilize digital methods for data collection.
  • Lead the implementation of SOPs for biomaterial submission for seed health and GM absence testing, ensure data entry into the company database, manage phytosanitary certification, timely germination test and assist with the exportation of onion seed and tissue samples.
  • Become proficient in the company’s breeding database (PRISM), follow proper methods for data collection and share, and effectively use Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Access, for data operations and communication.

If you...

  • Have a minimun High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrate 2-5 years of applicable experience. Additional agronomic and seed production courses or experience ispreferred.
  • Are fluent in verbal and written English. Spanish verbal skills is a plus
  • Are comfortable with working in hot, cold, wet, humid, dry and/or dusty conditions in an open field environment and competent performing tasks needing good manual dexterity and prolonged physical activity including lifting heavy weights [50 lbs.]
  • Have good attention to detail, analytical and accurate and good at compiling, and disseminating information of varying complexity.
  • Have ability to work independently as well as in a team and also compiling, and disseminating information of varying complexity.
  • Are adaptable to being involved in multiple tasks and quickly changing activities.
  • Are comfortable with significant seasonal travel by car and air - up to 10 days at a time and overtime in peak season.
