ROUNDTABLE INTERVIEW - Seed company executives - February 2004

FORUM

Denichi Takii
President
Takii & Co.
Japan

These past few years, consumers are getting more and more health conscious and farmers are demanding cost-efficient, laborsaving products. To answer those demands, the seed industry must develop varieties with high nutrition value, high tolerance to diseases or other beneficial characteristics.

The mission of seed breeding company is not only to develop new varieties but also to supply farmers with high quality seeds

Testing and improving seed quality is a never-ending challenge for us. Last year we established Quality Assurance Center in the premises of Kyoto headquarters. It is aimed to provide our customers with more accurate and precise information on quality through the most advanced testing methods and technologies, including variety identification to the DNA level.

We obtained ISO9002 accreditation in 2000 for our quality system, and we are proud that we have further improved our system to match top international quality standards and technologies by Quality Assurance Center.

You may agree that market-oriented, farmer-oriented and consumer-oriented strategy would be the most important for seed breeding company. We recently established Takii Korea Co., Ltd. in Seoul, and opened Takii Korea Breeding Station in Yoju, both in the Republic of Korea. We also established PT. Takii Indonesia in Yogyakarta, Indonesia last year. Now the number of our overseas subsidiaries has risen to nine. I believe that, through our worldwide network of subsidiary offices and research stations, we can provide our customers with faster and better service.

Takii family started as seed merchant in Kyoto, Japan in 1835. Since then, Takii has been independently  growing and expanding, and now it is regarded as one of the world’s largest breeder/producers of vegetable and flower seeds. Our varieties are widely recognized not only in Japan but also in many countries in the world. Our mission is to develop varieties with high nutrition value, high resistance to diseases and/or other beneficial characteristics, and also to supply growers with high quality seeds. We have six breeding and experimental stations in Japan (Shiga, Fujimi, Shiojiri, Ibaraki, Hokkaido, and Wakayama) and international facilities in U.S.A, Holland, France, Chile, Thailand, China, Brazil, India, Korea and Indonesia. Through the worldwide network, we are currently exporting to more than 120 countries.
