Principal Plant Breeder, Sweet Corn

Location: Rochelle, Illinois, USA

POSITION FUNCTION & SCOPE

Sweet Corn has been a very important crop for Del Monte and the continuous development of new improved super sweet hybrids has been a key element of our success. The role of the Sweet Corn Breeder will be to speed the trajectory of that success through conventional breeding techniques, Double Haploids, and by developing new efforts utilizing Marker Assisted Selection. The Breeder will work closely with the product manager, field department personnel from Del Monte plants and seed specialists in order to achieve the company's agronomic and quality requirements for Del Monte Sweet Corn hybrids. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct inbred line development and hybrid testing programs to provide hybrid sweet corn varieties having improved agronomic traits and canned quality as defined by Production, Quality Assurance and Marketing. 
  • Work with Research Agronomists, Product Manager, and Field supervisors in the evaluation of proprietary hybrids in plots and strips. 
  • Coordinate all cooperative hybrid programs between Del Monte and outside seed companies. 
  • Arrange contra season research seed production of inbreds and hybrids. 
  • Analyze and report breeding program results. 
  • Interact with University research cooperators to support their sweet corn research and help direct it towards Del Monte's needs. 
  • Attend annual International Sweet Corn Development Association meeting and other relevant meetings. 
  • Keep abreast of new developments in agricultural research and biotechnology and keep management informed such that advantage can be taken of these developments. 
  • Supervise technical support staff to enhance staff development and productivity for Del Monte. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • PhD in Plant Breeding required. 2-5 years plant breeding experience required. 
  • Knowledge of statistics as applied to field plot research and breeding. 
  • Knowledge of corn diseases. 
  • Experience with data management and statistical analysis software. 
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills for a range of backgrounds and interests. 
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment with multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
