Position in the organization: Reports to the Sr. Crop Specialist
Purpose of the position: Managing the breeding trials and screening trials of leafy vegetables in the Yuma area.
Brief description of responsibilities and duties:
- Managing, monitoring and jointly implementing the breeding trials and screening trials of leafy vegetables for the Yuma area.
Managing all breeding and screening trial procedures for leafy vegetables in partnership with the Breeder(s) and Sr. Crop Specialist. Selecting reliable trial sites for conducting the breeding and screening trials. Independently establishing these trials.
- Evaluating and second screening trials.
Evaluating second screening trials together with the Breeder(s) and/or the Sr. Crop Specialist. Gathering all relevant information, managing data and generating summary reports for information purposes within the commercial organization. Indicating potential materials for seed production purposes.
- Providing technical support.
Providing technical crop related information to customers and the commercial organization. Compiling crop manuals and crop strain descriptions for new commercial strains for use in catalogs, brochures, etc. as well as information for the commercial organization. Providing relevant information to the breeding department and commercial organization about new developments in the market relating to cultivating methods, acreage development, etc.
- Additional tasks and responsibilities.
Visit the Salinas area at least 5 times a year during spring/summer season together with the Sr. Crop Specialist and/or Breeder(s) in order to support trial evaluations. Visit the Enza Zaden seed production location at least 5 times during the growing season to assist in rogueing, de-heading and all other crop maintenance work in the research plots. Get trained to use the software program to assist Breeder(s) in administrative duties. When time permits: assistance in establishing pepper and onion trials in the Southwestern desert region; assistance in evaluating these trials.
Job Profile:
Education/Knowledge
Higher professional education plus 3 years relevant work experience. Has a thorough knowledge of leafy vegetables. Is familiar with the various cultivation techniques in use and has relevant market-related knowledge.
Skills
Excellent and clear communication skills (verbal and written), across a diverse range of organizational departments. Operates independently, is flexible and shows personal initiative.
Contacts
Establishes both an internal and external network of contacts. External networks consist of contacts at national and international trial sites, trial stations and research institutes. Provides technical support to customers at home and abroad. Participates in relevant Regional Product Meetings.
Working Conditions
Sometimes works under pressure in greenhouses or in the open field in varying climates. Is prepared to travel frequently.
