Agronomy Research Technician
Location: Willcox, Arizona, USA Description:
This person will be in charge of daily activities relating to Maize research dealing with heat and drought tolerance testing of experimental hybrid lines. Coordinate and be accountable for all Purdue research at this location. Help design the research trials, assemble and subpacket seed, plant, maintain plots (fertilize, control weeds and insects, irrigate, etc.), collect required data using a variety of research equipment, collect tissue samples, harvest and process seed. Hire, set wages, manage, safety audit, and terminate temporary employees. Maintain facilities and grounds in a professional manner.

This position will be primarily located on a research farm near Willcox, AZ with some travel to West Lafayette, IN required.
This position will require overtime during crop production times.
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two Years’ experience in Crop Production.
- Field crop production skills including but not limited to: fertilizer prescription and applications; herbicide prescriptions, calculations, and applications according to local, state and federal regulations.
- Within 90 days of employment the employee will acquire an Arizona Pesticide Applicators license.
- Must meet Purdue University forklift training requirements.
- Field production equipment operation and maintenance; operate, maintain, and monitor irrigation equipment; collecting, organizing, and planting seed samples.
- Experience with harvesting and data collection from field plots.
- Set wages, manage, safety audit, terminate temporary employees; keep the research farm clean and presentable for visiting researchers and VIPs.
- Ability to make solutions and order supplies.
- Must be able to communicate using cell phone, text, email.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
- Motivated individual with ability to efficiently multi task, work under pressure, handle interruptions and meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify and determine problems, analyze information and implement solutions.
- Capable of taking initiative and assuming responsibility.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Must be able to work in temperatures exceeding 100F.
- Must be able to work on their feet for many hours a day.
- Must able to lift 50-80 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Proficiency in software: Microsoft Word, Excel and iPad.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy, Ag Systems Management, Soil and Crop Management, Plant Breeding or Plant Pathology or related field.
- Field crop research.
- Irrigation experience.
- Machinery operation, maintenance and repair.
- Class A CDL preferred but not required.
