Where the Chemistry Happens
We are looking for a Senior Scientist - Phytopathology at our Acampo site in California. This role is responsible for delivering highest quality research in solanaceous and cucurbitaceous crops in the region towards development of important disease and pest resistance traits to support BASF vegetable seeds breeding programs.This position features a hybrid working arrangement with a mix of working at least 3 days onsite and 2 days working-from-home each week.

- Support solanaceous and cucurbitaceous breeding programs in developing and implementing research goals through coordination and alignment of team, resources and program direction
- Provide the highest quality disease and pest resistance phenotypic data to support integrated breeding teams toward industry leading resistance traits
- Coordinate watermelon pathology activities regionally and globally
- Engage and collaborate with breeding, product development and sales regarding crop specific disease resistance traits
- Responsible for prioritization and execution of deliverables of research projects according to planned timelines and agreed budget.
- Lead, coach, and guide a team of phytopathology specialists and technicians in fulfilling research objectives of the program
- Be creative and innovative in developing new ideas and solutions by exploring latest scientific knowledge and technologies in plant pathology or related disciplines
- Provide excellent diagnostics services to internal clients and external customers in a timely and cost effective method
- Responsible for maintaining accreditation and ensuring compliance of phytopathology facilities at the Acampo site with both CDFA and USDA-APHIS regulatory authorities (must be a US Green card holder or a US Citizen to obtain permits and be the permit holder)
- Budget Management: Prepare and analyze the budgets of the phytopathology program; analyze discrepancies in realization and budget within the guidelines of BASF Vegetable Seeds
- Human Resources Management: Responsible for the hiring and development of talent and phytopathology team in line with HR and company guidelines through established HR processes, mentoring, coaching, training and career planning.
Qualifications
BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Education
- Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Plant Sciences or related disciplines required Several years (2- 5 years) of working experience in industry/business setting in plant pathology preferable
Experience
- Experience in managing/collaborating with professionals from many different cultural backgrounds Experience in networking with plant breeders, academia, government researchers, and other industry professionals Training and experience in project and people management
Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of plant pathology practically and theoretically Thorough working knowledge and experience in plant fungal and viral pathology preferred Knowledge of disease and pest resistance breeding and affiliated phenotyping techniques Working knowledge on molecular plant pathology, microbial genetics, epidemiology, and plant physiology Fluent in English, additional country language preferable (e.g. Spanish) Drives innovative solutions with an entrepreneurial (result oriented reflecting business) mindset
Other
- Must be a US Green card holder or a US Citizen, to obtain permits and be the permit holder to work with both the CDFA and USDA-APHIS regulatory authorities
