Research Assistant, Cell Biology Laboratory

Location: Davis, California, USA

POSITION SUMMARY

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES

  • Culture induction under aseptic conditions (i.e. plant regeneration, cell culture, dihaploid creation processes)
  • Conducting or supporting experiments with regulated material with adherence to strict containment policies
  • Media preparation, including stock solutions
  • Application of automated flow cytometry, image analysis software, and media preparation equipment
  • Lab housekeeping that includes glassware cleaning, equipment maintenance
  • Greenhouse plant acclimation of in vitro materials
  • Greenhouse/Growth Chamber plant maintenance of donor plants for in vitro or in situ experiments.
  • Data entry of lab results and labor tracking via written and computer entries.

Other responsibilities:

  • Support of molecular biology activities in preparation of plasmids or bacterial constructs
  • Support provided on an “as needed” basis for other ongoing projects in the Davis research support team

Job requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in related field
  • Proficiency in full MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, OneNote)
  • Aseptic Technique
  • Chemical Nomenclature
  • General Greenhouse experience
  • General Lab experience

COMPETENCIES

  • Technical Skills – Robust grasp of scientific principles for experimental approach, data collection and conclusions presented. Work in project scope that will encompass broad areas of plant growth manipulation in numerous crops using a variety of methods, new technologies or automated approaches. Ability to conduct cell biology processes and aseptic/sterile techniques in all project assignments. Application of aseptic techniques with very minimal to no contamination issues. Knowledge of plant culture and maintenance in greenhouse and growth chamber. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office software (Outlook, One Note, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) necessary to document and generate reports. Technical know-how to apply bar coding or other electronic solution systems/software in standard tasks. Ability to troubleshoot and follow-up on tasks to assure project deliverables. Continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience, application and training.
     
  • Strategic Planning and Analysis – Ability to support multiple projects via strong organization skills. Have a good capacity for attention to detail and accuracy in data collection. Understanding of team strategies and objectives, and the motivation to learn and constantly improve processes and tools.
     
  • Interpersonal Skills – Essential to communicate with logic and scientific rationale to support ideas and recommendations. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills allowing for conveyance of results to supervisor and breeding teams, as well as training and supervising other staff members. Ability to develop and maintain productive work relationships within the research discovery and lab support teams, breeding teams, and other internal and external customers. Interacts with other team members to accomplish organizational goals. Ability to work independently under the supervision of a manager.
