Seedtech & Syngenta showcase the new high yielding Cereals and fungicide at their Open Days

Ireland
July 12, 2016

On July 5th & 6th, Seedtech and Syngenta welcomed guests to view the cereal and bean varieties that are being trialled in 2016 at their extensive plots in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny. This year Seedtech trialled over 900 varieties in over 1,800 plots across a wide range of crops at one of Ireland’s largest independent trialing systems, with the very latest in fungicide research from Syngenta.

Patsy Kehoe, Trials Manager with Seedtech introduced new varieties and said, ”Our trial site provides a robust test to each and every variety with regard to disease pressure on an annual basis, so any variety that performs satisfactorily at our location would be in a very good position to progress further.”

Moving through the winter trial plots visitors viewed the Hybrid Barley Quadra, the market leader offering highest yields on the DAFM recommended list and the best disease resistance package. Coming a close 2nd is Volume, and new to the range is Hyvido Bazooka which is showing the highest yields on the AHDB RL 2016. Highlighted to visitors was the continued success of Hybrid barleys in yield, quality and on profit margin.

Garrus in the winter wheat section is one of the new generation of high yielding resilient wheats, having come through the tough nurseries at Seedtech, selected by Patsy Keogh for its yield and ease of growing. Garrus also looks very suitable for early sowing and has performed very well, both as a first and continuous wheat.

Aidan Moore, Arable Consultant for Seedtech showcased the winning Oat Variety, Husky which is suitable for winter and spring sowing. Aidan said, “Husky is unique in that it combines the highest yields with excellent grain quality. A winning combination that is very difficult to surpass.”

Walking through the spring barley section, Aidan covered Irelands most popular feed variety Mickle and the main malting barley variety Propino. New to the Seedtech stable of spring barley is Laureate which is a promising newcomer and is well suited for the brewing and distilling industry as well as the feed market with consistent high yields.

Syngenta focused on their new SDHI fungicide Solatenol. As the trial site is a high pressure disease location, the fungicide trials demonstrated the efficiency of the product against the main diseases on all cereals. In addition, they had on show PGR work on spring barley as well as their portfolio of weed, disease and insect control options on field beans.

New to the Seedtech and Syngenta open day was a demo highlighting the spraying essentials and cultivation techniques on John Deere and Lemken machinery from Templetouhy Farm Machinery. Also a talk was given by Brett Wesley of Advanced Fertilizes on the ground breaking Koch Advanced Nitrogen (KAN) and its environmental benefits as researched by Teagasc.
