The scientific results achieved by the
Agricultural Research
Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are put into practice
through the economic and commercial bodies owned in part by the Academy
and the research institute.
These were set up due to the
recognition of the fact that, since the institute's finances come
under the Hungarian Treasury, it is unable to carry on business
activities on an equal footing with independent companies. The
establishment of trading companies attached to the institute means
that the institute's new varieties have the same chance of being
introduced into agriculture as those of any other origin.
The variety maintenance breeding of the
plant varieties and inbred lines bred and owned by the institute, and
the production of pre-basic seed for the cereal varieties, are carried
out by the Prebazis Co. Ltd. In the course of variety maintenance both
the selection of developed lines and registered varieties and the
preservation of the agronomically valuable gene pool take place
according to the criteria laid down by UPOV, the international variety
protection organisation.
The multiplication and sale of the basic stock of maize inbred lines,
the supervision of F1 hybrid seed production and the marketing of
Martonvasar maize hybrids is carried out by the Bazismag Seed Co. Ltd.
A similar role is played in the marketing of cereal seed by the Elitmag
Seed Co. Ltd., particularly as regards the sale and production of basic
and Grade l seed.
Both companies also act as the commercial representatives of the
institute, since they have mutually exclusive rights to represent the
Martonvasar varieties, to supervise seed sales and to collect licence
fees on behalf of the institute. |
