SAKATA Cabbage Hybrids Perform Well in All Major Markets

Cabbage is one of the most important and widely grown vegetables in the world today! It’s a staple in many people’s diets. In the United States, annual consumption has risen from 8.7 pounds per capita to 9.1 pounds over the past five years. Americans enjoy cabbage mostly in the form of cole slaw or sauerkraut. However, many red varieties are gaining popularity as part of various pre-packaged salad mixes.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of cabbage seed, Sakata has a clearly defined research program focused on the development of new and improved hybrids. "We are always seeking ways to strengthen our current cabbage product line by improving resistance to economically important diseases like Fusarium yellows and Black Rot. We are also fortifying tolerance levels to physiological problems such as tipburn and hollow stem", says Kazu Ikami, Sakata’s Cabbage Breeder.

Red Rookie is the leading variety in the red cabbage market because of its earliness, ability to make size, uniformity and compact plant. Its heads are dense, short cored, and have a deep internal color. Red Rookie resists cracking and is suitable for both the fresh and processing markets.

Sakata’s current cabbage products represent the efforts of a strong research commitment. We take great pride in developing and testing experimental varieties in all key market segments. In addition, we assess their performance under actual commercial production conditions. This allows us to evaluate promising new cultivars in a "real world" environment. When Sakata introduces a new hybrid, customers can feel confident that it will exceed their expectations.
