Green
Manure cover crops have been the standard in cover cropping
for quite some time. A few favorites in this category are
Merced Rye, Barley, Triticale, and other blends including
various varieties of peas, beans, and vetch.
Farmers
seem to like these blends for the large amount of green
material that is produced above ground.
Although
they provide easy establishment and sufficient erosion
control, green manure cover crops have many drawbacks.
These drawbacks include frequent mowing, shallow root
systems (dependent upon mix), little nitrogen fixation, and
volunteer crops. |
