Spotlight on brassica blends as biofumigant

Santa Maria Seeds presents: Brassica blend as biofumigant

BEAUT BRASSICA BLEND

The brassica family entails a very diverse array of species and cultivars, each suited for different growing conditions and production purposes.  In order to obtain optimum ITC levels, we have developed a diverse blend of hybrid brassicas named “BEAUT BRASSICA BLEND.”

After testing we found that the ITC levels are typically higher in the roots than in the tops of the plant.  With this in mind, we focused on developing a blend of brassicas that would offer greater root mass than a standard mustard crop.

This “BEAUT BRASSICA BLEND”, developed in New Zealand, is also later maturing than most mustards allowing more time for re-entry and possibly avoiding seeding before incorporation. We have performed trials last fall to isolate the most effective composition of a blend, as it pertains to any given application whether it be nematode control, sclerotinia, weed suppression, etc.

This blend has proven to be extremely beneficial as a rotation crop when other brassicas are not present.  Current studies are underway using the biomass as a tea in conjunction with drip irrigation in vineyards, as well as using the blend in rotations between broccoli and lettuce.
