2008 GrowForward Yield
Challenge draws to a close with the declaration of its grand
prize winner.
BASF Canada is pleased to
announce Jerold Sperling of Theodore, Saskatchewan, as the grand
prize winner of the 2008 GrowForward™ Yield Challenge.
Sperling, whose name was drawn from a pool of 296 Yield
Challenge participants, welcomed the surprising news and the
$35,000 cash grand prize.
“I entered the challenge for the learning experience,” said
Sperling. “But, when I entered the challenge, I didn’t think I
would win – I’ve never won. And when my business rep surprised
me one afternoon with the news, I was astonished. It was an
incredible surprise.”
The BASF GrowForward Yield Challenge – introduced in 2007 – is a
head-to-head comparison trial of BASF CLEARFIELD® Production
Systems, herbicides and fungicides against competitive products.
296 growers from across the prairies participated in this year’s
challenge, putting 10 different BASF products to the test on 12
different crops and across 324 trial sites.
Sperling was one of 32 Yield Challenge growers who had the
opportunity to test new TENSILE™ herbicide on CLEARFIELD
canola. TENSILE, which recently received registration, offers
two modes of action, broad-spectrum grass and broadleaf control,
including superior control of wild buckwheat, and complete
follow-crop flexibility. Using TENSILE on DEKALB® 71-30 CL,
Sperling put the CLEARFIELD system head-to-head with
LibertyLink® canola hybrid 5440 and Liberty® herbicide.
“I’m glad I participated; both fields yielded 45 bushels to the
acre, and I learned a lot from participating in the program. I
will definitely consider growing CLEARFIELD canola and using
TENSILE again next year,” said Sperling.
Participants in the GrowForward Yield Challenge are provided
with 20 to 40 acres of BASF product(s) to conduct field scale
trials to compare weed and disease control, and yield against
their typical crop production system or products. As part of the
challenge, participating growers track and report their results,
comments and observations on the BASF GrowForward Yield
Challenge website. This allows other growers to see how
particular products are performing in their specific region,
thus helping to make informed cropping decisions.
