The U.S. Department of Agriculture
has issued certificates of protection to developers of 26 new
varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They
include bean, bluegrass, corn, cowpea, lettuce, peanut, potato,
soybean and wheat.
The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety
Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be
new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the
exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their
products in the United States for the duration of protection.
The 26 certificates are:
- the Firstmate, EX
08120703, and Veronica varieties of garden bean,
developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, Calif.;
- the SR 2284 variety of
Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Seed Research of
Oregon, Corvallis, Ore.;
- the Brooklawn variety of
Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Turf Merchants,
Inc., Tangent, Ore.;
- the PHCCW variety of
field corn, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International
Inc., Johnston, Iowa;
- the Golden Eye Cream*
variety of cowpea, developed by Texas Agricultural
Experiment Station, College Station, Texas;
- the Multy variety of
lettuce, developed by Nunhems BV, HAELEN, The
Netherlands;
- the Georgia Greener*
variety of peanut, developed by University of Georgia
Research Foundation, Inc., Athens, Ga.;
- the AT-215* variety of
peanut, developed by Golden Peanut Company, LLC.,
Alpharetta, Ga.;
- the Dakota Rose variety of
potato, developed by NDSU Research Foundation, Fargo,
N.D.;
- the 2388028 variety of
soybean, developed by D&PL Technology Holding Company,
LLC, Scott, Miss.;
- the D4483789 and 4010165
varieties of soybean, developed by Monsanto
Technology, L.L.C., St. Louis;
- the 92Y90, 95Y70, 93Y90,
93Y50, 94Y20, 94Y01, 93Y80, 91Y70, and 90Y20 varieties of
soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International,
Inc., Johnston, Iowa;
- the Lassik* variety of
common wheat, developed by The Regents of the University
of California, Oakland, Calif.;
- the Hat Trick* variety of
common wheat, developed by Trigen Seed, LLC,
Bloomington, Minn.; and
- the Jamestown* variety of
common wheat, developed by Virginia Tech Intellectual
Properties, Inc., Blacksburg, Va.
* In the United States, seed of
this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of
certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations
specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended,
7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).
USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant
Variety Protection Act, which provides time-limited marketing
protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and
tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
