USDA/FAS GAIN report: Climate change and Indian agriculture

.

Washington, DC
October 7, 2008

USDA/FAS GAIN report IN 8116

Report highlights:

India agriculture is vulnerable to the impact of climate change due to predominantly rainfed agriculture, Himalayan glacier fed river basins, a large livestock population and a 7,500 kilometer long coastal agriculture system. India’s policy and initiatives on climate change do not focus on mitigating strategies for lowering GHG emissions, particularly if it compromises the growing energy requirement needed for achieving their developmental goals, including large scale expansion of coal-fired thermal power. On June 30, 2008, the Prime Minister released the National Action Plan on Climate Change that focuses attention on eight priority
national missions, including the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture.
