Yields Are Looking Up™ for
CLEARFIELD canola
BASF Canada is
announcing the addition of two high-yielding canola hybrids and
upcoming new Nexera® specialty oil varieties to their 2009
CLEARFIELD® Production System for Canola lineup. Each of these
new varieties, in combination with the BASF portfolio of
one-pass herbicides, has been developed to help growers achieve
optimal return on their CLEARFIELD canola.
New CLEARFIELD canola hybrids DEKALB® 71-40 CL and BrettYoung
5505 offer strong agronomics and are yielding toe-to-toe with
other leading herbicide-tolerant canola hybrids. DEKALB 71-40 CL
offers excellent lodging resistance and resistance to blackleg
and Fusarium wilt. It’s a medium-height hybrid with mid-season
maturity. In 2007 trials it yielded 121 percent of Q2 and 46A65
checks. It will be broadly available for the 2009 season.
BrettYoung 5505 offers excellent lodging resistance, expresses
moderate resistance to blackleg, and resistance to Fusarium
wilt. It’s a medium-tall hybrid with mid to late maturity. In
2007 trials it yielded 116 percent of Q2 and 46A65 checks. This
hybrid will be available in limited quantities for the 2009
season. These new hybrids round out the CLEARFIELD canola hybrid
lineup for 2009, which also includes Proven® 45P70, Pioneer®
Hi-Bred 45H73 and CANTERRA® 1651H.
“This year, we have more companies producing more acres of
CLEARFIELD hybrids than ever before,” says Harley House,
CLEARFIELD brand manager for BASF Canada. “These companies have
raised the bar on CLEARFIELD canola yields, making CLEARFIELD
canola a good fit for growers.”
CLEARFIELD Nexera varieties for 2009 will also offer growers
healthy returns and unique identity-preserved marketing
opportunities in the specialty canola market. Nex 845 CL, which
will be broadly available in 2009, is a medium-height variety
with very good lodging resistance, resistance to Fusarium wilt
and moderate resistance to blackleg. It yielded 118 percent of
Q2 and 46A65 checks in 2007. Another notable Nexera innovation
for 2009 is the NX4 CL Series, its next generation of CLEARFIELD
canola. This series will provide yields competitive with Nex 845
CL and will be available in varieties to fit all growing zones.
“The CLEARFIELD canola lineup, when combined with the superior
one-pass weed control of CLEARFIELD canola herbicides such as
ODYSSEY® DLX, provides growers with the best opportunity to
maximize their yield and returns by avoiding costly re-sprays,”
says House. “Market research shows that, on average, 50 percent
of Roundup Ready® acres and 25 percent of LibertyLink® acres
receive two or more passes per season for weed control, where as
CLEARFIELD canola acres require only one-pass on 97.5 percent of
all acres.”
As introduced for the 2008 season, a CLEARFIELD Commitment Fee
of $30 per bag will be associated with the purchase of
CLEARFIELD canola seed. This supports the BASF strategy to
accelerate trait-based innovations, such as new CLEARFIELD
crops, for Western Canada growers. Growers of all CLEARFIELD
crops are required to sign a CLEARFIELD Commitment.
By signing the CLEARFIELD Commitment, growers become eligible
for the 2009 CLEARFIELD Advantage™. For CLEARFIELD canola
growers specifically, this includes, a 10 percent rebate off
registered CLEARFIELD herbicides in addition to savings
available through GrowForwardTM Rewards; 100 percent re-spray
coverage in the event of grassy weed control failure when using
ODYSSEY DLX or ABSOLUTE®; and, $1 per acre off BASF seed
treatments – GEMINI® and CHARTER® – as well as DYVEL® and DYVEL
DSP on all cereal acres grown.
The 2009 GrowForward Rewards program will also offer CLEARFIELD
canola growers additional value, including savings of up to 12
percent on CLEARFIELD herbicides, and the opportunity to earn an
additional 10 percent rebate on their entire GrowForward Rewards
payment if CLEARFIELD canola seed is purchased by December 31,
2008. Growers can learn more at their CLEARFIELD retailer.
