Organics are an important
and growing sector in Italian agriculture. Italy ranks first
in Europe in both number of organic farms and organic
cultivated land area. The Italian situation demonstrates the
more general notion that while EU policies have influenced
the development of organic agriculture in Europe as a whole,
member state implementation of EU policies, along with
member specific incentives, have had a critical role in the
development of the organic sector.
