Syngenta's Alto fungicide receives Section 3 registration in soybeans - Powerful fungicide receives full U.S. registration

Greensboro, North Carolina
May 12, 2008

Syngenta Crop Protection announced today that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Section 3 registration for the use of Alto® fungicide in soybeans.

Alto is a highly systemic triazole fungicide containing the active ingredient cyproconazole. Providing residual curative activity, cyproconazole is one of the most effective triazoles currently available for Asian soybean rust (ASR) control.

After showing outstanding results in Brazilian research trials, Alto fungicide secured a Section 18 Quarantine Exemption in the U.S. in 2006 for ASR control.

“As ASR threatens to infect new areas each year and spreads further into the United States, this new registration has become increasingly important for the upcoming growing season,” said Jamie Eichorn, fungicide brand manager for Syngenta Crop Protection. “In 2007, ASR traveled farther north than any other year, infecting soybeans in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma for the first time. With a Section 3 registration, soybean growers will have the option to protect their fields with a trusted product.”

If ASR is a threat, apply Alto preventively between the R1 and R2 growth stages for optimal control. However, Alto offers flexible timing; applications can be made through the R6 growth stage. Alto should be tank mixed with Quadris® fungicide to provide extra protection during the critical growth stages when ASR and other soybean diseases can be most damaging.

“A tank mix of Alto plus Quadris fungicide is recommended for the most complete protection against a wide variety of soybean diseases,” said Eichorn. “With both preventive and curative activity, the combination provides broad-spectrum disease control and improvements to plant physiology, enhancing Plant Performance™ and helping increase yield.”

More information, including application and rate recommendations for Alto fungicide, is available from your local retailer or sales representative, or by calling the Syngenta Customer Center at 866-SYNGENTA (866-796-4368).
