Partnerships between university and industry researchers have
led to great successes in agricultural technology, including
increases in food quality and production. Highlighting its
commitment to establishing collaborative partnerships,
the Seed Biotechnology Center
(SBC) at UC Davis has established a new University Research
Partners program, bringing together faculty from across the
university. Over 45 academic researchers throughout many
departments and UC campuses have converged to create a diverse
group of individuals working in partnership to mobilize the
research, educational, and outreach resources of the university.
Through this program, the SBC is working to create effective
strategic alliances to benefit both the faculty involved and the
seed and food industries. As a part of this effort, the SBC
recognizes and supports university scientists whose research
contributes particularly to the following areas:
- Plant Breeding
& Genetics
-
Plant Pathology
-
Crop & Ecosystem Science
-
Development, Physiology & Biochemistry
-
Postharvest & Food
Safety
-
Agricultural Economics
-
Trade & Policy
-
Biological
and Agricultural Engineering.
By linking university researchers with external industry
scientists, more successful collaborations will be established,
facilitating the discovery and commercialization of new seed
technologies for agricultural and consumer benefit. As a means
of highlighting the research and collaborations the SBC
University Research Partners are involved with, we will be
featuring some of their work in
the News section of the SeedQuest
website throughout the coming months.
In addition, next year will be the 10th anniversary of the SBC.
To celebrate, and to facilitate interaction of these new
partners with industry scientists, SBC will be hosting a
symposium titled “Seed Biotechnologies: Filling the Gap
between the Public and Private Sectors” to be held at UC
Davis May 11-12, 2009. Confirmed speakers include Molly
Jahn from the University of Wisconsin and Rob Dirks from Rijk
Zwaan. This event will be open to the public. For registration
information, please contact Jamie Miller at
jkmiller@ucdavis.edu.

The Seed Biotechnology Center was established at UC Davis in
1999 to mobilize the research, educational, and outreach
resources of the university in partnership with the seed and
biotechnology industries for agricultural and consumer benefit.
The SBC works to connect the University with external
stakeholders both nationally and internationally to support the
fundamental role of seeds as a delivery system for improved
agricultural products. To find out more about SBC, please visit
