BASF Canada has received
registration for TENSILE™
herbicide from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).
With this registration, CLEARFIELD® canola growers now have
another herbicide option, one that controls tough-to-beat weeds
such a wild buckwheat and also offers excellent follow-crop
flexibility.
“In 40 GrowForward™ Yield Challenge trials conducted across
Western Canada this past season, TENSILE was proven to provide
superior control of wild buckwheat,” stated Chris Vander Kant,
brand manager for IMI herbicides for BASF Canada. “This is good
news for CLEARFIELD canola growers who have wild buckwheat
issues or growers who wish to use an herbicide-tolerant system
but are contending with this problem weed.”
Wild buckwheat is a serious and tough-to-control weed which can
reduce canola crop yield and quality. It is particularly
troublesome because of its climbing nature which creates
harvesting issues. It can also cause crop lodging and makes
swathing and combining difficult. Wild buckwheat is most
susceptible to herbicides in its early stages so must be
controlled when it is small.
“Buckwheat is hard to kill,” commented Terrel Hill, a grower in
Medstead, Saskatchewan, “its emergence is a bit later and it’s
very important that we have a good chemical like TENSILE that
does a good job on it.”
TENSILE, which is registered for all soil zones, also offers
excellent rotational freedom. Following an application of
TENSILE, CLEARFIELD canola growers have the ability to seed any
type of canola, canary seed, durum wheat, field peas, flax,
spring barley, spring wheat and tame oats.
In addition to control of wild buckwheat, TENSILE also controls
such broadleaf weeds as cow cockle, green smartweed,
lamb’s-quarters, redroot pigweed, shepherd’s-purse, stinkweed,
volunteer canola and wild mustard. It also suppresses cleavers
and kochia.
Grassy weeds controlled by TENSILE include barnyard grass, green
foxtail, Persian darnel, volunteer barley, volunteer durum
wheat, volunteer spring wheat, volunteer tame oats, wild oats
and yellow foxtail. It also suppresses Japanese brome grass.
“BASF continues to introduce innovative, made-for-Canada
solutions to help growers get the most from every acre,”
continued Vander Kant. “TENSILE is one such innovation and we
look forward to introducing others in the future.”
