Syngenta Crop Protection's federally approved Platinum 75SG insecticide receives registration for use in California

.

Greensboro, North Carolina
August 13, 2008

Syngenta Crop Protection today announced that the California Department of Pesticide Regulation approved Platinum® 75SG insecticide for use on brassica vegetables, bushberries, cucurbit vegetables, fruiting vegetables, grapes, leafy vegetables, potatoes, root vegetables, strawberries, tobacco, and tuberous and corm vegetables. The Environmental Protection Agency granted federal registration for Platinum 75SG in January 2008.

Platinum 75SG contains the active ingredient thiamethoxam, a second-generation neonicotinoid insecticide, and controls more than 30 sucking and chewing pests with minimal impact on beneficial insects.

Syngenta created Platinum 75SG to replace Platinum® 2SC for the convenience and benefit of growers. Platinum 75SG contains a higher concentration of thiamethoxam than Platinum 2SC, so growers now have fewer containers to handle and dispose.

“Platinum 75SG provides the same long-lasting residual control and low use rates as Platinum 2SC, but in a more convenient concentration,” said John Koenig, Syngenta insecticide brand manager. “This product represents the commitment Syngenta makes to the long-term success of our customers.”

Platinum 75SG is soil-applied and exhibits a systemic mode of action with rapid root uptake properties. Roots of germinating seedlings or transplants treated with Platinum 75SG translocate the thiamethoxam to the cotyledons and leaves of the plant. The plant then slowly metabolizes the thiamethoxam, resulting in long-lasting residual control.

Platinum 75SG is absorbed by roots and remains inside the plant and only targets pests that chew or suck on the plant tissue. Thus, beneficial insects, which typically do not feed on plant tissue, are minimally affected. It also has a good mammalian and environmental safety profile, and is compatible with Integrated Pest Management programs, classifying Platinum 75SG as a reduced-risk pesticide [1].

“This innovative product provides growers with yet another outstanding tool from Syngenta,” said Koenig. “The performance and convenience of Platinum 75SG will allow the product to fit nicely into potato and vegetable growers’ insect control programs.”

Syngenta is a world-leading agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture through innovative research and technology. The company is a leader in crop protection, and ranks third in the high-value commercial seeds market. Sales in 2007 were approximately $9.2 billion. Syngenta employs over 21,000 people in more than 90 countries. Syngenta is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SYNN) and in New York (SYT). Further information is available at www.syngenta.com.
