A 'Barley Variety Guide for
Western Australia 2008' has been developed with
GRDC support by a
DAFWA team comprising
Jeff Russell, Blakely Paynter and Andrea Hills.
Mr Russell said the Guide was a quick reference for growers to
determine which varieties of barley best suited their region.
"The decision whether to grow barley for malting or feed depends
on five main factors, which are addressed in the Guide," he
said.
These included: premium paid for malting grade varieties;
relative yields of feed versus malting barleys; differences in
input costs due to agronomy and disease constraints; likelihood
that malting barley would meet receival specifications and the
location of receival segregations for malt barley varieties.
The Guide, also known as Farmnote 312, is available for download
and printing from the DAFWA website on
www.agric.wa.gov.au
