USDA Plant Variety Protection Office grants protection to 42 new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 22 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include wheat and soybean.

The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 42 certificates are:

  • the 91M30, 90A06, 90M02, 90M80, 90M92, 91M01, 91M41, 91M80, 92M11, 92M21, 92M41, 92M53, 92M54, 92M76, 92M81, 92M82, 93M14, 93M61, 93M62, 93M70 and 94M71 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa;
  • the Ripper* variety of common wheat, developed by Colorado Wheat Research Foundation, Centennial, Colorado;
  • the DP 493 variety of cotton, developed by D&PL Technology Holding Company, LLC, Scott, Mississippi; and
  • the 91M61, 92M02, 92M03, 92M33, 92M51, 92M52, 92M73, 92M74, 92M75, 93M13, 93M43, 93M52, 93M81, 93M82, 93M95, 93M96, 94M31, 95M60, and 95M82 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa.

* In the United States, seed of this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time-limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
