The Grain Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and
the Western Australian
State Government have united in a joint venture to form the
company Intergrain Pty Ltd, which will be responsible for future
breeding and selection of superior Western Australian wheat
varieties.
The alliance, with the State Government as a majority
shareholder, will enable the wheat breeding program to have the
necessary economies of scale to remain competitive with wheat
breeding programs elsewhere.
The new company is co-located at the Western Australian
Department of Agriculture and Food at South Perth.
The first high performance wheat varieties for Western
Australian farmers developed by Intergrain, Magenta and
Yandanooka, have been released.
According to Dale Baker, chair of the board of directors at
Intergrain, Magenta is a high yielding, Australian Premium White
variety, with better stem and leaf rust resistance than
Wyalkatchem.
"Yandanooka, a noodle quality wheat, has similar yield to Arrino
and has better resistance to all three rust diseases than
Calingiri and Arrino," Mr Baker said.
