Syngenta acquires exclusive rights to abamectin manufacturing technology

.

Greensboro, North Carolina
May 10, 2007

Syngenta announced today that Merck & Co. Inc. has granted Syngenta an exclusive license to use Merck’s manufacturing technology for the insecticide abamectin in the field of crop protection, seed treatment, turf and ornamentals. Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

The use of abamectin based products is expanding rapidly to replace older insecticides facing regulatory restrictions. “This license enables Syngenta to significantly expand manufacturing capacity of abamectin while retaining the high purity associated with existing Merck manufacturing processes. It underwrites our investment to support the growth of Agri-Mek®, Avicta®, Avid® and Proclaim®, all key Syngenta brands based on abamectin,” said Mike Stepan, insecticide product line head.

Syngenta holds registrations of abamectin in more than 80 countries to control pests at low use rates in fruit, vegetables and cotton. Key markets are the United States, Europe, Japan and Korea.

Syngenta is a world-leading agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture through innovative research and technology. The company is a leader in crop protection, and ranks third in the high-value commercial seeds market. Sales in 2006 were approximately $8.1 billion. Syngenta employs some 19,500 people in over 90 countries. Syngenta is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SYNN) and in New York (SYT). Further information is available at www.syngenta.com.

Agri-Mek and Proclaim are Restricted Use Pesticides.
Agri-Mek®, Avicta®, Avid®, Proclaim®, and the Syngenta logo are trademarks of a Syngenta Group Company.
